Americans have their fireworks on the anniversary of the day they claimed their independence. I can understand that; it makes complete sense to me.
But today, in the UK, we celebrate the attempt of Guy Fawkes back in 1605, to blow up our Houses of Parliament; surely the strangest event a nation has ever continued to commemorate.
Parliament, of course, survived the infamous gunpowder plot and today continues to spew out endless quantities of paper on Brexit.
Q: How many civil servants does it take to light a bonfire?
A: One to strike the match and 23 to fill in the paperwork.
You’ve got to laugh, but then, laughing is very good for you.
